I’m in Melbourne (home of AFL) and it happens to be the Grand Final weekend! So it’s no surprise that Aussie Rules has announced their world-first Google Glass app! Named AFL Glassware, the app is poised to become Australia’s first sporting app for Google Glass and only the second in the world to have been created for headline-making head accessory, beating the English Premier League and America’s National Football League. Australian telecommunication’s giant, Telstra today revealed it had already built an AFL app for the net-savvy gadget, beating other sports and telcos to the punch.
Telstra digital media and content director Adam Good said the company paired with local developer Seventh Beam to create the app after chief executive David Thodey secured an early version of Google Glass during a trip to the United States.

Mr Good said the AFL Glassware app was “designed to bring fans closer to the game” just as its smartphone and tablet apps had done. “Obviously, we’re not launching the app right this minute but it’s a completed app and when Google’s ready to launch we’ll have content in their app store,” he said. “It’s Google’s call, and we’re not privy to launch details, but it sounds like it’s going to be ready for season 2014.”

The app will let Google Glass wearers look to the screen above their right eye to see a current AFL match score, or time left on the field. Using Glass’s speakers, which rely on bone conduction technology, wearers could also listen to match commentary without disturbing those around them. Alternatively, they could choose to have the commentary displayed as text on the screen.
Google Glass connect to a smartphone wirelessly to access the internet, and can be navigated by touching the panel on the right side of the frames, or with tilts of the user’s head. Mr Good admitted using the app, and Google Glass, at a football game could look odd, but he said we would adapt to the technology, just as we did with smartphones.
“It does look a little strange,” Mr Good said. “But it’s perhaps no more awkward than when we first started using mobile phones and we were all standing around, talking in awkward positions, not sure if we could walk and use the phone.”
Though Telstra has created an app for Google Glass, Mr Good said that was not a sign the carrier would sell the devices when they became available. Google had been widely tipped to launch Google Glass late this year, though the expected date has since been pushed to early next year. The developer-ready Explorer version of the smartglasses cost $US1500.
